Our Why

Our Why

Abide Village was born from a deeply personal place—our love for our children and our concern for their futures.

For families raising children with disabilities, there is a question that eventually becomes impossible to ignore:

What happens when we are no longer here?

Who will know them well enough to understand what they need?

Who will encourage their independence while making sure they have the support they need?

Who will invite them in, include them, value their gifts, and make sure they are not simply cared for—but known, valued, and loved?

And perhaps one of the hardest questions of all:

Where will they call home?

These aren’t simply questions about housing. They are questions about adulthood, independence, safety, relationships, purpose, community, and belonging.

For the parents who helped begin Abide Village, those questions are personal.

We know what it means to advocate for our children. We know what it means to navigate systems that can be complicated and overwhelming. We know the victories that come when our children accomplish something others once thought they couldn’t.

And we know what it feels like to look toward the future and wonder whether the kind of community we want for them will exist when they need it.

Eventually, we realized we might have to help build it.

We Began Imagining Something Different

What if there were a community where people with disabilities could live alongside people of different abilities, ages, backgrounds, and income levels?

What if affordable housing could be intentionally designed to encourage connection rather than isolation?

What if front porches faced one another, sidewalks connected neighbors, and shared spaces gave people natural opportunities to build relationships?

What if people had opportunities to work, learn new skills, volunteer, make friends, help their neighbors, and contribute to the community around them?

What if someone could have greater independence without being alone?

That vision became Abide Village.

Belonging Is Different From Being Included

We believe there is a difference between being allowed into a space and knowing that you truly belong there.

Belonging happens when someone knows your name.

When your gifts are recognized.

When your contribution matters.

When someone notices when you’re missing.

When you have people to celebrate with, people to rely on, and people who rely on you.

It happens when you aren’t simply receiving services or support, but are also given opportunities to contribute, make choices, develop relationships, and be part of something larger than yourself.

That is the kind of community we want to build.

A Vision Bigger Than Our Own Children

Our “why” began with our children, but it has grown far beyond them.

Abide Village is for the adult with a disability whose parents lie awake wondering what the future will hold.

It is for the person who wants greater independence but still needs connection and support.

It is for the individual living on a limited income who deserves access to a safe, affordable, welcoming place to call home.

It is for families searching for possibilities they haven’t been able to find anywhere else.

And it is for people who simply believe neighborhoods are stronger when there is room for everyone.

We believe people deserve more than a place to live.

They deserve dignity. Choice. Opportunity. Relationships. Purpose. Safety. And belonging.

Building the Future Before the First Home Is Built

Abide Village is a long-term vision, but we don’t believe we have to wait for land, buildings, or cottage homes to begin making a difference.

Through our quarterly Independent Living Skills classes, we are already helping adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities practice everyday skills, develop confidence, make choices, and work toward greater independence.

Every class reminds us that Abide Village was never simply about constructing houses.

It’s about helping people build lives.

The physical village will take time. It will require land, resources, partnerships, creativity, perseverance, and a community of people who believe something different is possible.

But the work has already begun.

Why Abide?

Because every person deserves a place where they are known.

A place where they can grow.

A place where they can contribute.

A place where they can build relationships.

A place where they can experience greater independence without losing community.

And a place where they know, without question:

I belong here.

Our story began with a question:

What will happen when we’re no longer here?

Abide Village is our commitment to helping build an answer, not only for our children, but for generations to come.

Abide Village is more than housing.

It’s a place to live. A place to grow. A place to contribute. A place to belong.
